Adjustment of Status Versus Consular Processing
If you're here in the U.S., you may be able to have your immigration interview in the U.S., even if your visa has expired, and sometimes, even if you entered the country illegally. This is known as "adjustment of status."
If you're not eligible for adjustment of status, you will have your immigration interview at a U.S. consulate. This is known as "consular processing."
